The men's soccer team took a 2-1 loss to the Harris Stowe State University Hornets (2-6, 1-3 AMC) today in an AMC matchup on the Eutectics' home field at Saint Louis University High School.
The scoring opened in the 20th minute of the first half off a successful penalty kick by Nedzad Idrizovic (SR/Oakville, Mo.). It was his first goal of the season.
The Hornets turned around their deficit with a first-half equalizer from Hugo Tarrida off an assist from Felipe Campos seconds before halftime.
With 19:42 left on the game clock, STLCOP goalkeeper Ethan Haege (FR/St. Libory, Ill.) batted away Marcos Silva's shot from ten yards out, and Andrej Markesic was there to tap in what would be the game winner for HSSU.
The game took a sharp turn with 7:18 remaining when Gabriel Osorio of Harris Stowe received a red card for a high-studded, late challenge. The card capped off an all-around physical contest in which five cards were given out.
The short-handed Hornets managed to hold off the Euts for a tight victory.
Ethan Haege had a standout performance with nine saves, including one from a penalty. The Eutectics put seven shots on goal, with HSSU goalkeeper Nicholas Morales saving six.
The Eutectics, now 0-4-1, 0-3 AMC, will next host conference rival Hannibal-LaGrange University at Saint Louis University High School on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 9 p.m.
